Nice website, if you follow the link you will be right on the Congo river. Interesting travel organisation.
Mbeki proposed to arrange a meeting between Tswangirai and Mugabe. Made me think of the meeting Mandela set up with Mobutu and Kabila. It's understandable in that case that Mugabe would refuse such an offer from Thabo Mbeki.
Mobutu thought Mandela was a friend, but he was in fact ushering him to the exit. Mobutu was haited by most of the heads of states of the countries surrounding Congo because he had been an American allie most of the time, while they were fighting the Apartheid government.
It's therefore logical probably that you see a Kenyan minister attacking Mugabe the most vocally, because his position is similar to that of Tsvangirai. He has a different relation with the west.
Would be interesting to see what Museveni is going to say about this. He needs to stay good friends with his American friends.
The virtual diaspora on the internet of migrants from Russia and turkey in Germany is being studied at the Wilhelms University of Westfälen in Muenster. Which potential does the net have for migrants and their selforganisations?
Which results both at home and abroad have resulted from this?
In what relation do these activities stand in the offline activities of migrants and of what takes place in both the country of origin and the country of residents?
Voter Mobilization Sample Tools Planning & Training
Included in This Tools Packet:
Sample Voter Mobilization Program Planning Worksheet (English and Spanish)
Sample Precinct Walk Rap (English and Spanish)
Sample Precinct Walk Training (English and Spanish)
We would like to extend special thanks to PILA (Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action) and SCOPE (Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education). The above tools build on templates originally created at these organizations and we recognize their leadership and innovation in systematic electoral organizing and leadership development.
Overall Goals and Strategies 1. How do you see your electoral work forwarding your organization’s mission? 2. What are your overarching goals for your electoral work this Fall 2006? 3. How will you link your voter mobilization work to the ongoing work of your organization? 4. Will you be collaborating with other organizations for this voter mobilization project? How?
Voter Contacts 5. Describe the targeted group you are seeking to educate and mobilize to the polls. (This could include specifics on age; race/ethnicity; geography; voting history; and those living within a certain political boundary such as a City Council, Assembly or Congressional district. Example: Our target group is always, sometimes and new Korean voters ages 18-40 in Central Los Angeles, where we are trying to build a stronger membership base.)
6. Approximately how many voters are in this targeted group? How many will you attempt to contact? How many will you actually contact prior to the final four days of Get-Out-the-Vote (GOTV) weekend and Election Day? (For example: There are 25,000 Korean voters age 18-40 in Central Los Angeles; we will attempt to contact 6,000 in 15 precincts, those precincts where we already have a critical mass of members. Our goal is to contact 3,000 in those 15 precincts.)
7. How will you contact voters prior to Get-Out-the-Vote (GOTV) weekend and Election Day? How many weeks will your contact program be? How many mobilizations will you have to have to reach your contact goal? (For example: we will have a six-week door-to-door program prior to Get-Out-the-Vote weekend and Election Day; we will have six volunteer Saturday mobilizations with the goal of having at least 40 volunteers each Saturday, contacting at least 300 targeted voters each Saturday; in addition, we will have a 5-person stipended team who will do phoning three nights a week who will contact an additional 200 voters per week.)
8. What will be your criteria to decide whether or not to re-contact voters and mobilize them to the polls over GOTV weekend and Election Day? How will you re-contact these “supportive voters” to remind them to get to the polls? (For example: Our “supportive voters” will be all voters who commit to vote yes on Proposition 1C. Our goal is to have 30 phoners the night before the Election and 50 Election Day volunteers to re-contact the 1000 supportive voters we will have identified.)
Volunteer Recruitment and Development 9. How many volunteers do you want to participate in your voter mobilization program? What are your training or leadership development goals with these volunteers?
Political Education 10. What are your political education goals for your contact with voters? (For example: Do you want to educate voters on certain ballot initiatives? Do you want to educate voters and poll them on one of your organization’s campaign issues that is not on the ballot?)
11. What are the key tools or materials you will use for your voter education and mobilization work?
Sample Work Plan Grid
GOALS What are the measurable goals for your GOTV program? KEY ACTIVITIES & TIMELINE How will you achieve your goals? List specific activities with projected dates.
OUTCOMES What concrete results do you expect? How will you measure whether you’ve achieved your goals?
"It is also difficult for us to understand that life for European Muslims is different from life for American Muslims. Muslims in Britain or the Netherlands or Germany are second-class citizens because those countries have more homogenous populations that don’t readily integrate outsiders."
"Europe is a much more fertile breeding ground for terror than the United States. Unintentionally, some of our closest allies are producing some of our clearest threats. Because of our special relationship with Britain and all our similarities with them, most Americans don’t realize that it is very different to be a Muslim citizen of Britain than a Muslim citizen of the United States, so we have trouble accepting that doctors in Britain become terrorists. We have to understand that while educated Muslims in Europe may not be materially deprived, many of them feel socially and emotionally deprived by a lack of acceptance. Earlier this month we saw the arrest of German citizens plotting a terror attack against American targets there. Also this month we saw Danish citizens arrested for plotting an imminent bombing. Both plots had links to Al Qaeda. "
Daar moeten we hard tegen optreden.
Caroline...
Leeuwarden has abuot 800 foreign studenst that study at the NHL and CHN. Recently I heard that some of those students have a real hard time the first year they get here. The reason for that is that they can't look for work in the first six months. The IND, immigration services of the Netherlands, refuses to give them their papers in time. And once they get them they are only valid for half a year.
I visited two Universities in the US recently, Berea and Athens. The villages are totally focused on on students. It brings a city to life. It would be great if Leeuwarden tried to take more advantage of the great potential those students give this city.
